Skye is a gorgeous miniature horse born under rather traumatic conditions.
Her mum required quite a bit of intervention in the birthing process, and as a result was quite shocked, and disinterested in her foal. During the first 12 hours she completely rejected her foal, kicking Skye away when she came to suckle.
This resulted in an inadequate passive transfer of immunoglobulins, and as such Skye would have a greatly increased chance of succumbing to a viral or bacterial infection. Immunoglobulins are measured via a blood test. Skye's immunoglobulins were dangerously low, and she required a plasma transfusion. The plasma was administered via a catheter placed in her jugular vein over half an hour. She then had follow up blood tests to ensure she had received the appropriate amount of plasma.
Fortunately, Skye is now a happy and healthy foal able to battle the infections that she will invariably be exposed to.
